Rehman has praised the Kent Messenger’s campaign on legal highs in a debate in Parliament.
The KM has been running their ‘High Time’ campaign to raise awareness of the lethal dangers of legal highs and called for clearer warnings on packaging.
During a debate on the Government’s policy on legal highs in Parliament on 1 July 2014, Rehman spoke about the role of education and the media in making people aware of the dangers of such substances.
He said "my local paper, the Medway Messenger, ran a campaign on the effect and consequences of such highs, and other papers should do the same, to make people aware."
Speaking at the end of the debate, the Home Office Minister Norman Baker confirmed that 68 deaths have been linked to the use of legal highs in 2012, which is 4% of drug related deaths.
He also confirmed that the Government’s expert led review is expected to report soon. As part of this review, labelling is also being considered "including descriptions and how substances are promoted and sold."
Commenting after the debate, Rehman said: "Legal highs have tragically claimed the lives of far too many people in our country. Local papers, such as the Messenger, play an important role in raising awareness of this issue.
"I am determined that the Government takes action to clamp down on this reckless trade and I am pleased that we should soon see the results of the Government’s expert led review."
