Rehman has resubmitted his Private Members Bill on mental health in the House of Commons.
His Perinatal Mental Illness (NHS Family Services) Bill aims to improve access to specialist services for the tens of thousands of women affected by perinatal mental illness every year.
The Bill would guarantee an appropriate level of provision for Mother and Baby Units in England, ensuring that 95% of patients do not have to travel more than 75 miles to reach expert care.
Whilst the Government has announced plans to increase the number of beds in these specialist units, this does not include the guarantees that Mr Chishti’s Bill would introduce, including on the distance patients have to travel.
In January the Government announced that £290 million will be invested over the next five years to provide mental healthcare for new mums.
Backed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Bill will get its second reading in the Commons on 2 December 2016.
