Rehman has committed to running a full marathon for cancer research after his colleague was diagnosed with the disease.
His fellow Rainham Central councillor Mike O’Brien is battling cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.
Rehman is looking to meet with representatives from Cancer Research UK to see if he can run for them in the London Marathon 2017 or another race in the next year.
He will be setting up a JustGiving page shortly to enable people to add their support.
Rehman said:
"I was devastated when my dear friend and colleague was recently diagnosed with cancer. Mike is one of the most active members of the team, always willing to help anyone in the community.
"When he was struck down by cancer, it shows that it can happen to anyone and I wanted to ensure that research into the disease is supported.
"I’ve spoken to Mike and offered to run a marathon for Cancer Research UK in the next year. Hopefully I will be selected for London or perhaps even Medway’s first marathon."
