Rehman Chishti, MP for Gillingham and Rainham, has secured a Parliamentary debate on Medway’s City status bid. The debate will take place this Thursday at approximately 6pm on the floor of the House of Commons. Rehman will address Mark Harper MP, the Minister responsible for the 2012 city bids, as he outlines the strength of Medway’s bid.
"I am delighted to have secured this important debate. I grew up in Medway and it’s a fantastic place to live with a rich heritage, innovative enterprise, sporting excellence, festivals, concerts, art exhibitions and a strong community. I think it is fair to state that Medway is a city in all but name," Rehman commented.
Rehman has already raised Medway’s city bid in a Parliament during his maiden speech on 8 July when he said, "I am very much looking forward to 2012 and the Queen's jubilee, when I hope that Medway will rightly be given city status."
The debate will be broadcast live on the Parliament channel.
