Joint statement by Rehman and Steven Marsden, Chairman of St Barnabas’ Church PCC following the meeting of the Church Commissioners on Thursday (8 May 2014) to consider the future of St Barnabas’ Church in Gillingham:
"Following strong representation made by the PCC, members of the congregation, the community and the local MP, the Church Commissioners have decided to refer the proposed closure of St Barnabas back to the Bishop of Rochester for reconsideration.
"This is a significant victory in the ongoing campaign to save the Church from closure, and we are pleased that its sustained and continuing revival has been recognised by the Commissioners.
"In particular, the Church Commissioners have asked the Bishop to give further thought to the changing circumstances at St Barnabas’ Church, where the attendance has increased and the financial situation has improved since the original proposal for closure was considered in 2009.
"They have also asked the Diocese to explore alternative models, included sharing clergy amongst the local churches, and to consider the impact on local schools.
"Meanwhile, the local community must continue their campaign to keep St Barnabas open, and work together to demonstrate why this much loved Church should be retained."
