Rehman will be making his London Marathon debut next year in aid of Cancer Research UK.
The charity, which is dedicated to saving lives through research, has given the MP a place in their team for the 37th London Marathon.
Rehman decided to run the marathon after his colleague was diagnosed with cancer. His fellow Rainham Central councillor Mike O’Brien is battling cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.
Donations can be made through the JustGiving site.
Rehman hopes to make history by joining the 77 former and current MPs who have completed the route around the capital since the event started in 1981. He will have to train hard to beat the record set by the former MP Matthew Parris who completed the race in 2:32:57 in 1985, a time that has yet to be beaten.
Previous Rehman has completed twelve half marathons for local good causes including the Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust and Medway Hospital Radio.
Rehman said:
"I am delighted that Cancer Research UK has given me a place on their team for next year’s London Marathon.
"Like many people, I have friends and colleagues who have been affected by cancer. I was devastated when my dear friend Mike O’Brien was recently diagnosed with cancer and I want to ensure that research into the disease gets the support it deserves.
"I hope to raise thousands of pounds for this good cause so please, if you can, add your support on my JustGiving page."
