Rehman welcomed the Government’s investment in midwife training which means there are now 800 more midwives working in the NHS that there were in May 2010.
In a question to the Health Minister, Rehman Chishti asked what steps the Government is taking to support the recruitment and training of midwives.
The Minister Dr Daniel Poulter MP revealed that there are more midwives now than before the last election and a record 5,000 in training.
The Health Minister also praised the excellent work on the Oliver Fisher Special Care Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital, which looks after around 900 premature and sick newborns each year.
The Government has pledged to ensure women will have one named midwife, one to one care and a choice over how and where they have their babies.
Rehman said: "At Medway Maritime Hospital they are delivering a newborn almost every 90 minutes and has excellent facilities including the Birth Place and the Oliver Fisher Special Care Unit. I welcome the Government’s progress in ensuring that the number of midwives in training matches the needs of birthrates so that expectant mothers in my constituency can get the support they need."
