The Business Secretary Vince Cable MP has welcomed the record number of company formations last year in Gillingham.
Rehman asked the Business Secretary about business growth in the constituency, after the latest Duport Business Confidence Report showed that there were 148 company formations between July and September last year – more than any other third quarter on record. This is an increase of 23% compared to 2011.
The report also shows that that net company growth also reached a new record, with company register increasing by 84. This compares to an increase of 54 in 2011.
In reply to Rehman's question, the Business Secretary said: "a large amount of entrepreneurial activity is taking place. The percentage of the population engaged in business has increased from about 6% to 9% in the past two years, and what is happening in Gillingham is an example of that."
Commenting afterwards, Rehman said:
"I am pleased to see that there were a record number of company formations in Gillingham in the third quarter last year. This shows how the Government’s initiatives are assisting companies in the constituency and helping to create jobs."
