Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Maria Miller MP supported the work of Gillingham Anchorians rugby club in encouraging women to participate in sport.
On 14th February 2013, Rehman Chishti MP asked the Minister to: “Join me in welcoming the news that Gillingham Anchorians rugby club, which is keen on increasing women’s membership, recently received £50,000 of national lottery funding?”
Gillingham Anchorians RFC was awarded a £50,000 grant from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. This is to assist in financing the installation of outdoor floodlighting of its training pitch at the Club’s home in Darland Avenue, Gillingham.
The project aims to encourage more people to participate in sporting activity. Particularly, the project aims increase the number of women playing sport, planned through partnership with Kent RFU’s female section.
The Minister applauded the work in Gillingham and Rainham to make sure that women are encouraged to participate in sport. She said: “As a result of the Olympics and the Paralympics over 600,000 more women have participated regularly in sport.”
